Six Tips on applying for a job
First impressions can have a significant impact on a relationship, both personal and professional. It can set the tone of how someone views you – negatively or positively. Applying for a job is your first impression with a potential employer. It can mean getting an interview, or not getting an interview. You want to make sure you put your best foot … I mean “words” forward. Here are 6 tips to successfully submit a job application.
-
Read through the Application
It’s all in the details. Read through the application more than once. Employers receive multiple applications and can easily narrow down the field by eliminating the ones that are missing information. Most often they are using an applicant tracking system that will automatically reject incomplete applications. If there are fields that requires in-depth responses, think through your answers and respond accurately. Make sure to choose your words carefully, choosing words you would use, so the hiring managers can see that your answers are genuine.
-
Use a Professional Email Address
A professional job application calls for a professional email address. Some employers might disqualify an applicant for having an unprofessional email address, even if the rest of their resume shows they are perfect for the job.
-
Customize your Cover Letter to the Position
Look through the job description and pay attention to the education background required, skill sets needed and what type of personality would fit the role. They all describe the type of employee they are seeking. Take that information into account and write a cover letter that shows you are the perfect candidate. Keep it concise and relevant, fitting it into one page. If the employer likes what they read, they’ll want to schedule an interview with you to learn more about the goals or skills you mentioned in your cover letter.
-
Include Keywords in your Resume
Review the job description and find words that identify the traits, skills or experiences that the company is seeking. Include those words throughout your resume. Make sure to select keywords that portray you as capable of fulfilling the job requirements. Upload your resume so employers can have a copy to reference.
-
Proof, and then Proof Some More
Errors in your application show an employer you did not care enough to take the time to proofread or that you are not proficient with written communication. Most jobs require basic communication skills, so not putting in the effort to submit an application that is free from errors can hinder your chances of being hired.
-
Review your Social Media Profiles
It is common for employers to look at your social media profiles. They want to know something about the person they are hiring and feel that social media sites are good sources. Check your profiles and consider removing anything questionable. That means deleting posts or comments that might not reflect well on you.
Take a final glance through your application before submitting. Increase your chances for employment by submitting a stellar application.
