The history of Knute Nelson
Knute Nelson started serving the Alexandria community over 75 years ago. But the story started much earlier.
When Minnesota Senator Knute Nelson died in the 1920s he left his family home and 23 acres for “the construction, and equipment and maintenance of a suitable ‘Old People’s Home.’”
Many older adults were cared for at home by their families. He wanted to ensure that no senior was left behind.
Our mission, to enrich the lives of everyone we serve, grew out of his vision. It affects all our decision-making – from strategic planning and the services we offer to what residents eat at dinner (and everything between).
