The Powerful Impact of Onboarding
Setting Up Employees for Success at Knute Nelson
Onboarding is the method of introducing a newly hired employee into an organization. It’s an important part of helping them understand their new position and job requirements.
Traditionally it’s a time to complete necessary paperwork, set up workstations and computer access, communicate role expectations and introduce new employees to others in the company. It can be a lot of “checking off the boxes.” But the impact of onboarding is much greater than just the basics.
Benefits of Extended Onboarding
It’s also typical in many organizations that onboarding takes place in the first three months. From there, the new employee is left to navigate on their own. However, the impact of onboarding begins when it is extended throughout an employee’s first year. This way, you can positively impact their experience, help them build strong relationships within the organization and set them up for success. Knute Nelson recognizes the importance of onboarding and has developed an extensive program that guides our employees from day one through their first year as a Knute Nelson employee.
Knute feels that onboarding is the key steppingstone for our new employees. It sets the stage for a successful journey. A well-defined and executed onboarding program increases employee engagement, provides a clear transfer of knowledge, and offers support through resources. Here, our employees feel valued, connected and are able to build strong relationships with their managers.
Creating a Welcoming Environment from Day One
The first-day experience with Knute Nelson is a fact-filled and fun-filled day of orientation. We share information about Knute’s past, present and future, as well as tour our local facilities in Alexandria, MN. We want to give everyone a first-hand look at the services we offer and meet our employees that provide care. Those connections and level of understanding must take place right away.
For successful implementation of our onboarding program, training modules and process guides have been developed outlining each manager checkpoint throughout that first year. Our new employees have 30-, 60- and 90-day follow-ups with their managers to ensure they have everything they need to be their best. From there, regularly scheduled one-on-one meetings take place to maintain consistent communication, build strong relationships and exchange knowledge for success in the role. From there until the end of the first year, development training, continuing education opportunities, community involvement, career growth conversations, and more take place. Developing fulfillment and exceptional skills in our employees directly and positively impacts the care they provide for our residents and clients.
